This year, Latvia will participate for the very first time in the major international scientific initiative “MetaSUB Global City Sampling Day 2026”. Lead Researcher Robin Guevarra is looking for energetic and curious volunteers to help bring this project to life!
What is MetaSUB?
MetaSUB is a global research consortium that studies the microbiomes (bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms) of urban environments and public transport systems in major cities worldwide. Coordinated, simultaneous sampling across the globe allows scientists to better understand urban ecosystems and the spread of antimicrobial resistance.
What will volunteers be expected to do?
- Sample collection: Collecting DNA samples (using cotton swabs) at designated locations within Riga’s public transport network and urban environment.
- Data logging: Entering information into a mobile app (location, time, environmental conditions).
- Science communication: Assisting with public awareness about the project’s progress (optional / on a voluntary basis).
